Nottington University

Welcome!

Welcome to Nottington University. I hope you’ll enjoy exploring the University through the many windows that this Web site opens on our programs. As you navigate its pages, you’ll find all the resources of a major research university combined with the human scale, flexibility, compassion, and responsiveness of a small, tight-knit progressive-liberal arts college.

NU is distinguished by innovative research and scholarship across all the major fields of study, led by programs of great distinction in philosophy, ecological science, and the arts. The University offers a growing list of undergraduate majors, along with master’s and doctoral degrees.

Students here profit from the opportunities for enriching their minds and souls in a  progressive, communal environment that encourages freedom of thought and intellectual integrity while imparting a message of humanity, respect for life and for community, and environmental awareness. Initiatives such as the NU mentoring project, cooperative activities that allow students and teachers to switch roles in education, service-learning programs and internships, philosophy speaker series, and the University’s groundbreaking greenery project make the surrounding village a better, healthier place to live and work for us all.

Nottington University provides an outstanding environment for students in every dimension of college life and learning. Our students enjoy small classes — more than half of them with fewer than 20 students — allowing very high-quality interaction among students and between students and faculty. NU undergraduates participate in a wide array of extracurricular activities and clubs, from sailing trips on Serenity Lake and treks up Dove Mountain, through student media, recreational and club sports and numerous musical groups, and through the renowned NU theater company, our cutting-edge ecological-science and global-warming student research efforts, and an award-winning debate society. A Nottington education is rich in opportunities for intellectual and personal development strongly grounded in the University’s profound commitment to the liberal arts and progressive values.

The University has a living commitment to the ethical foundations of democracy and to ideals long-associated with Nottington Village: fairness, social justice, compassion, environmental stewardship, openness, independence, truth, lack of pretense and the achievement of practical results. The power of these values is expressed in the way the University’s graduates live their lives and contribute to society. It’s no wonder the village considers NU “THE University.”

And education is something NU believes is the birthright of all and that money should not be the determining factor in pursuing education. Thus, we offer sliding-scale tuition, barter and work-study options to cover costs, and numerous  scholarships. No one who wants an education will be turned away: Should someone have no means of presenting any tuition, he or she can participate in one of our many financial-aid hardship programs or volunteer a few hours a week in our on-campus daycare (coming soon!), our sister project with the Organic Farm and Greenhouse, or by helping with construction. Everyone has something of worth to offer and payment need not be money.

Nottington University welcomes any community members who would like to be a guest lecturer. Contact the Chancellor for details.

Again, welcome. We hope you will enjoy your visit to our Web site and that you will find that the path of your education career starts here.
